#protest starting at 12pm to fight for Leeds children's surgery heart unit #sosleedsdemo

Millennium Square, Leeds, West Yorkshire LS2 3AD, UK

The organisers say: As a result of the NHS’s ‘Safe & Sustainable’ review of children’s heart surgery provision across the country, the Children’s Heart Surgery Unit at the Yorkshire Heart Centre in Leeds is at risk.

The unit provides specialist surgery and care to children from all over Yorkshire and the Humber.

If the unit were to close, the hundreds of children who require life-saving surgery each year would have to travel long distances – possibly hundreds of miles – to another facility. This could put those children’s lives in even greater jeopardy.
It would also cause severe distress for the patients and their families, and would see the end of a great team of specialist surgeons and experienced nurses who have worked so hard to provide unrivalled service and care under one roof.

If this were allowed to happen, it would affect not only the hundreds of families who rely on the unit each year, but everyone in the region who believes Yorkshire should retain its essential healthcare services.

We are committed to fighting these plans and ensuring the Children’s Heart Surgery Unit remains open.

The final decision was made at a public meeting in London on Wednesday 4th July 2012. The panel decided surgery would not remain at Leeds. We believe the case to retain the Leeds Unit is stronger than ever and we are prepared to continue our fight through a judicial review if required.
